Saddleback Sebastopol Geese

Saddleback is a pattern rather than a colour of its own. A saddleback Sebastopol carries colour on the head, neck, back and flanks with a white body underneath, so you get a grey saddleback, a buff saddleback, and so on depending on the base colour.

The clearest way to understand it is to see two at once. A buff saddleback and a grey saddleback standing together show the same pattern in two different base colours: the white body is identical, and only the coloured saddle over the back and neck differs.

Because the pattern and the base colour are separate things, describing a bird as simply a saddleback is only half the description. Ask which base colour it carries. A grey saddleback and a buff saddleback look very different, and a lavender saddleback different again.

Saddleback is often confused with splash, which is also a broken pattern but an irregular one. A saddleback's colour sits in a defined place on the bird. A splash's does not.
