Blue Sebastopol Geese

Blue is a cool dilution of grey that reads slate rather than dove. It sits close enough to lavender that the two are regularly confused, and lighting makes the confusion worse.

The practical difference between blue and lavender is depth. A blue holds more colour and reads distinctly slate through the neck and wings; a lavender is paler and softer. Photographed in shade, a lavender can look convincingly blue, which is why so many birds are sold under the wrong name in good faith.

Both come from the same direction: cool dilution of the ancestral grey. Warm dilution gives you buff and then lilac instead.
