Lavender Sebastopol Geese

Lavender is a dilution of grey. A lavender Sebastopol carries a soft dove grey head and neck, a cream breast, and slate rather than brown tones through the wing feathers. It is the most searched of the coloured Sebastopols and one of the harder ones to find.

Lavender is the colour most people arrive looking for, and the one most often mislabelled. Set a lavender beside a grey and the difference is obvious: the lavender is paler, cooler, and lacks the brown cast and hard feather scalloping the grey carries. Set it beside a photograph on the internet and all bets are off, because light does more to this colour than any other.

The same bird will photograph warm and almost fawn in full afternoon sun, then read distinctly blue in the shade of a barn. That is not a trick of the camera, it is what a dilute does. It is also why we would rather you saw a bird in person, or at least in several photographs taken at different times of day, before deciding.

Because lavender is a dilute of grey, it sits in the same family as blue and is a step further from buff, which dilutes warm instead of cool. The breeding guide covers what pairings tend to throw.
