Can Sebastopol Geese Fly?

Why the feathers stop them

A normal flight feather is a flat vane with barbs that zip together into a solid surface. Push that against air and you get lift. A Sebastopol's flight feathers are long, soft and spiralled, and the barbs do not lock. There is no surface to push with, so there is no lift, no matter how strong the bird is.

What that means for your fencing

It makes them one of the easiest waterfowl to contain. A fence they cannot walk through is a fence they cannot leave, so there is no clipping, no netting overhead, and no annual wing trim. For a lot of keepers that alone is the argument for the breed.

Do smooth breasted birds fly?

No. The difference between curly and smooth breasted is about the breast feathers, not the flight feathers, and both types carry the same curled wing feathers. A smooth breasted Sebastopol is as flightless as a curly breasted one.
