Temperament

Are Sebastopol Geese Friendly or Aggressive?

Sebastopol geese are among the calmer goose breeds and handle well, particularly when raised from goslings. They are not naturally aggressive. Ganders do get markedly more assertive through breeding season, which is normal goose behaviour rather than a fault of the breed.

What makes a friendly goose

Handling from hatch, more than breed. A gosling handled daily grows into a bird that treats people as part of the flock. A gosling raised in a pen with no contact grows into a bird that treats people as a threat. That is true of any goose, and it is most of the variation you will see between individual Sebastopols.

Breed does contribute. Sebastopols are consistently described as calmer than most, and that matches what people report keeping them. If you want tame birds, buy goslings and handle them, or ask about adults that have been handled.

Breeding season is different

From late winter into spring a gander guarding a nest is a different animal. He will position himself between you and the goose, hiss, and follow you across the pen. This is not the bird turning nasty; it is a gander doing exactly what a gander is for.

It passes. Outside the season the same bird is easy company again. If you are setting up a breeding pen, the breeding guide covers pairing and what to expect.

With children and other animals

Calm handled birds are generally fine around children who know not to chase them. A goose that has learned people are safe does not go looking for trouble. Supervise anyway: a goose is a large animal and a wing buffet from a startled bird is not nothing.

They mix reasonably with other poultry given space. Whether they suit your setup is covered in keeping Sebastopols with chickens.

Common Questions

Are Sebastopol geese friendly?

They are among the calmer goose breeds and handle well, especially when raised from goslings and handled daily. Birds raised without contact stay wary.

Are Sebastopol geese aggressive?

Not generally. Ganders become assertive from late winter through breeding season, which is normal goose behaviour. Outside that window they are easy to be around.
